âOh, donât worry. We were watching her too. Isnât that right, Shiina?â
âWe were,â said Shiina, nodding. âI found her performance to be rather impressive as well. So much so that I almost wonder if she has the makings of a bona fide actress⦠But enough about that. Kamiki-kun. Isnât there something youâre forgetting to say to Marine and I?â
âPardon?â
I was flummoxed. My mind was drawing a complete blank. Unlessâ¦
âOh, right,â I said. âThanks for volunteering despite your busy schedules, guys. What with your extracurriculars and all.â
Mashima was on the girlsâ softball team, and Shiina was in the wind ensemble.
âYeah, Iâm pretty slammed,â said Mashima. âOne of the seniors retired over summer break, so now they went and made me team captain. As if I didnât have enough on my plate already⦠But itâs okay. I wanna participate and enjoy the culture festival too, so I didnât mind volunteering to be an actor.â
âWhoa,â I said. âTeam captain, huh? Thatâs pretty cool.â
âI know, right? Feel free to buy me a celebratory soda anytime, bud.â
âDonât think I will, but thanks for the offer. So, uhâ¦how âbout you, Shiina?â
âNot too stressful on my end, actually. Weâre not the most disciplined club in the world, so weâve just been taking things slow⦠No, wait. Thatâs not what I meant.â Shiina widened her eyes a bit as if to admonish me. âListen here, you. If Iâm not mistaken, you ended up placing first on the end-of-semester exams thanks to our help, correct? Not that I think we deserve all the credit, mind you, but I think a few words of gratitude are in order, at the very least.â
Her harsh manner of speaking made me recoil a bitâbut she was justified in her anger, given that it had been months now since the exam results were announced and I hadnât made even the slightest effort to say a word to either of them.
âYeah, Shiinaâs kind of a stickler about that sorta thing,â said Mashima. âMe personally, I donât really care all that much.â
âYouâre too lax, Marine,â said Shiina. âYour teammates will never look up to you with an attitude like that.â
âUgh⦠I hate that youâre right,â said Mashima, twisting from side to side.
âWell, uhâ¦â I cut in, and they both redirected their attention to me. âSorry for the delay, but thanks, you two. You really came in clutch. Donât think I ever couldâve gotten first place without your help.â
With a contented little huff, Shiina replied, âThatâll do, I suppose.â At least she seemed satisfied, which was all that mattered for my purposes.
âSo tell us, Kamikiâhow are things between you and Nakki?â Mashima said nonchalantly.
âWhat âthingsâ?â I asked.
âWhat, isnât it obvious? I meanâ¦â She leaned in to whisper in my ear, âYouâve got the hots for her, donâtcha?â
âBwuh?!â I sputtered. âWh-what are you saying, you idiot?! Like hell I do. Stop making all these weird assumptions about me.â
âOh, you donât? Huh, weird. Guess I just got the wrong idea, then?â Mashimaâs lips curled into a knowing smirk as she said this, which prompted a perplexed furrow of Shiinaâs brow.
